about

“The plant image goes back to the Upper Palaeolithic, when representations of different plants were apparently used to differentiate he seasons of the year. But everything indicates that the equation of tree with kinship lineage is a relatively late social symbolism, which acquired its significance in the Neolithic, at the swidden farming stage of cultural evolution. From then on, however, the relationship between trees and kinship has been expressed in a great variety of beliefs and ritual practices all over the world.”
