about

“In the Shan Hai Ching (The Land and Water Classics), of fifty-eight tribes which had totemic systems, eight had snake totems. Nü Wa had a snake’s body, and she and her clans wore the snake’s skin and worshipped it. The fact that they revered the snake and called themselves after it would seem to show that the life of each individual of the tribe is bound up with the snake, and this very animal must benefit them who put their faith in it.”
